Who We Are

The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Veterans Association (ATSIVA) represents and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have served, or are serving, in the Australian Defence Force and associated services.
We honour the legacy of Indigenous veterans—those who served with distinction, often without recognition, and those who continue to uphold the values of service, courage, and sacrifice.

Our Purpose

ATSIVA exists to:

  • Recognise and commemorate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander military service across all conflicts and peacekeeping missions.
  • Advocate for the welfare, rights, and wellbeing of Indigenous veterans and their families.
  • Promote awareness of Indigenous military history and its contribution to Australia’s defence story.
  • Strengthen connection and identity among Indigenous veterans, families, and communities.

What We Do

  • Commemoration: Conduct and support ceremonies, such as the Indigenous ANZAC Commemoration Service, that acknowledge the service and sacrifice of our people.
  • Advocacy & Support: Work alongside ex-service organisations to ensure equitable access to veteran entitlements, care, and recognition.
  • Education & Awareness: Share stories of Indigenous service through community outreach, events, and education programs.
  • Connection: Provide a network for veterans and families to share experiences, build strength, and support each other.

Our Vision

To ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans are recognised, respected, and supported—past, present, and future.

Our Emblem

Our emblem unites four symbols:

  • The profiles of a female and male soldier, representing equality and shared service.
  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, symbolising our peoples and cultures.
  • The crests of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, representing the unity of service across all branches.
Together they stand for pride, remembrance, and the enduring spirit of Indigenous service.

Our Commitment

We honour those who came before us by ensuring their stories are told, their service remembered, and their descendants supported.
We continue their mission—to serve Country and community with integrity, courage, and respect.
